Africa: The Ultimate Overland Adventure

If you're craving something raw, remote and unforgettable, Africa offers a backpacking experience unlike any other. Think wild landscapes, starry desert skies, and the freedom to explore at your own pace. It’s not the easiest trip you’ll ever take, but that’s what makes it epic.

Whether you're planning a Skeleton Coast road trip in Namibia, a self-drive safari through Botswana, or a broader overland route through Southern or East Africa, we’ll build your personalised custom travel itinerary to match your pace and budget.

Backpacking in Africa – What to Expect

This is the most demanding region we cover and the most rewarding. Infrastructure can be limited, roads are often rough, and you’ll need a sense of adventure (and a bit of patience). A 4X4 vehicle is highly recommended for flexibility and access to off-grid spots, but it’s possible to travel without one if you’re prepared to plan carefully.

This is a place where you can drive for days with just wildlife and scenery for company. Campsites are affordable, fuel is your biggest cost, and excursions are where your budget can rise quickly. From remote bush camps to breezy beaches, the continent is full of unforgettable stops like Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and more.

Africa Travel Budget –
What You Might Spend

Your spend in Africa depends more on how you travel than where you go. Here’s a breakdown (excluding 4X4 rental):

•    Budget Explorer (£400–£700/month): Camping, slow travel, few paid excursions

•    Standard Backpacker (£700–£1000/month): Mix of campsites and lodges, more excursions

•    Comfort Traveller (£1000–£1500/month): Private rooms, guided trips, flexible transport

•    Luxury Overlander (£2000+/month): All-in options, upgrades, high-end wildlife lodges

When’s the Best Time to Go?

Spring (Sep–Nov)

Warming weather, active wildlife and greener views, but rising heat can bring storms.

Summer (Dec–Feb)
Fewer crowds and low-season pricing, but expect hot, humid and rainy days in many areas.

Autumn (Mar–May)
Dry season approaches with lower crowds, though you might still catch the tail end of the rains.

Winter (Jun–Aug)
Peak season with the best wildlife sightings and comfortable weather, but also higher costs and busy camps, so book ahead where possible.
