Bolivia

Bolivia is one of South Americas most underrated backpacking gems – rugged, high-altitude and full of character. From the surreal salt flats of Uyuni to the lively streets of La Paz, it’s a country that surprises travellers at every turn. Many backpackers arrive expecting a quick visit, only to find themselves staying far longer, drawn in by its authenticity and adventure.

Culturally, Bolivia feels deeply traditional. You’ll find colourful markets, centuries-old Andean customs and communities that still live as much as they did generations ago. It’s one of the best places to experience indigenous culture up close, with local homestays and village treks offering real insight into every day Bolivian life.

The weather varies wildly – freezing nights in the Altiplano and tropical heat in the Amazon basin, meaning planning your route by season is key. Whether you’re hiking volcanoes, mountain biking the infamous Death Road, or sailing across Lake Titicaca, Bolivia rewards those who go off the beaten track and embrace its raw, wild side.
